Gateways’ CONREP and psychology internship program at the main hospital were recently awarded membership by the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC)—placing them among esteemed programs nationwide. This recognition underscores Gateways’ commitment to meeting rigorous national standards for high-quality doctoral-level psychology training. As a result, the program now attracts applicants from across the United States and Canada, including those from American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited institutions.

Gateways has made it a focus to hire staff who are able to communicate through the threshold languages, including Spanish. Gateways is also able to communicate with non-English speakers through the Department of Mental Health’s Interpreter services. A majority, approximately 53%, of the patients Gateways serves are Hispanic. Around 48% of Gateways’ staff are proficient in Spanish, enabling them to provide high quality and culturally competent care to all patients.
100% of Gateways’ staff receive Diversity Training and Cultural Competency Training when they are hired. Additionally, the clinical staff receive an annual Cultural Competency training to ensure all of our patients are treated with appropriate, high-quality care.

Gateways CONREP Doctoral Psychology Internship Program
Los Angeles & San Diego Counties
The Gateways CONREP internship ascribes to a practitioner-scholar model through the practical application of theory and knowledge. This training site’s primary mode of education is experiential, supplemented with didactic seminars, modeling, clinical supervision, case consultation, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The goal of this internship is to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, problem-solving, judgment, and other scientific skills that are particularly pertinent to the practice of both clinical and forensic psychology. Gateways CONREP understands this is achieved through a variety of activities, including consultation of the professional literature and the use of empirically grounded methodologies and interventions.
Gateways CONREP has two training tracks based on location—Los Angeles County and San Diego County—with two interns placed at each site for the entirety of their training year.

Gateways CONREP’s DIP has full APPIC membership; however, it is not APA accredited. That said, Gateways CONREP submitted their self-study for its initial application for APA accreditation in May 2025.
